South America
Our biggest trip as part of our travel sabbatical is a trip to South America, starting with Chile. Chile stretches 4,300 km separated from Argentina by the beautiful Andes. After Chile we visited Antarctica with the MS Roald Amundsen and finally we went to Peru to visit many of it's natural and cultural wonders.

The first week we visited Santiago, Valparaiso, the Colchagua valley and the Cajon del Maipo. The last two being beautiful valleys South of Santiago.
After that we visited San Pedro de Atacama, the desert at very high altitude close to Bolivia and Argentina.
We then hired a 4x4 camper for a trip South of Santiago

Then the 4x4 camper trip. We picked up the camper in Santiago and spent the first 2 weeks South from Santiago in the Chilean Lake district and it's national parks.
After that we visited Chileo an island at the coast of Chile with rain forest and then crossed over to the mainland again to visit a part of North Patagonia on the famous Carretera Austral

Most people think of Chile as Patagonia and the Torres del Paine National park. This had to be part of our trip of course.
After the brilliant camper trip we made it South to Punta Arenas / Puerto Natales to do this famous trip and it did not disappoint!

A place we never believed we would visit, but Chile (and Argentina) are the best places to visit Antarctica from.
From Punta Arenas we boarded the MS Roald Amundsen from Hurtigruten and made an 18 day expedition cruise to the Antarctic peninsula. Absolutely Amazing!

From the Antarctica Peninsula we travelled in 6 days to the North of Peru.
North Peru is not heavily visited by tourists (yet) and has some amazing pre inca treasures as well as stunning nature.
We started in Chachapoyas and also visited the Moche and Chimu archeological sites near Chiclayo and Trujillo

The last stretch of our South America adventure is the South of Peru.
Here we will be visiting the well known areas like Machu Picchu, Colca Canyon, Lake Ticticaca as well as the cities of Arequipa, Puno and Cusco.

It is very special to drive and walk around in the driest (non polar) desert in the world. The colours and rock formations are amazing and there is a lot of wildlife around.

We hired a 4x4 camper truck to explore the Lakes (Los Lagos), Chiloe and North Patagonia.

The trip of a life time - we went to Antarctica! Passing the infamous Drake Passage we did 10 days of landings on the Antarctic peninsula - amazing!

The North of Peru is not well known, but has some amazing cultural and nature treasures. And much older than the famous Inca sites in the South.
